My Day Playing With DJK (Danielle, Jim, Kevin and Timian

Yesterday I had the pleasure and good fortune of banging out some numbers at Jim's.. He's a really awesome musician, technician, engineer, and father of 4 all around good guy. We started at about noon and laid down 3 by about 6pm. My co-writing friend and videographer Timian Ba (Mr T) shot the whole thing. Danielle played piano and Kevin on banjo rounded out the trio except for Jim playing his stand up bass live off the 1st floor, while "rolling hard drive" downstairs on "Slow Tide". We laid down "Silent River" and also a couple versions of "Long After John". We got tired fast because of the rehearsal and recording as a band without previously getting together. The pizza helped, but when second one showed up, (after I pranked the Pizza Nova order taker) with anchovies, the day was done. Cold beer and out the door we went. All in all though, an unforgettable day. The best recording experience I've ever had.......it felt real real......ya know what I mean. Thank you everyone for your kindness and skills......you made gave a great big lift to these songs!

Manteye And The Moonshine Cafe

When manteye of 20yrs ago was starting out, I had the really good fortune of always having a place to play, because I could attend and jam at Augy or Ernie's single or sometimes (rarely) their duo act in various locations in the GTA.
These could be 1,2,3 or more song performances or full on jam and writing sessions complete with shitty, but effective voice recorder in tow.
Augy was super fun to hang with, because he was super supportive on most creative, built-in audience jam sessions.
He called it FREE-JA.
The Moonshine Cafe offers a way cooler place than some of the places that we used to hang in.
It's about 10 minutes from home in Oakville, and every time, I walk through the doors, I feel like I have come home again. It has a great, little, but effective stage where performers, jammers, open mic'ers of any one with the desire to play can find a home.
I walked thought the doors there in late November, last year after finding the Tuesday night open mic at the Moonshine Cafe and couldn't resist, giving it a whirl. I was as nervous as a house fly at a frog convention, but I went anyways.

I got there, dropped my guitar case down near the front door, signed in, ordered a great, ice cold beer and watched. There was performer after performer going at the supportive audience with one thing after another. Some original material, some not.
I forgot to mention that I came there earlier that night with my daughter. I went there so she could play at this place where kids under age can get up and do a number. I guess I figured if my 12 year old can find the nerve, what would my problem be.....right.
We met James, (the owners son) and wow before you know it, she was up in front a mic, in front of a small but supportive audience killin' a "Dixie Chicks" song.
I came back (after dropping her back home and nervously, but excitedly went back for a go.
I met Phil Kane, minutes before going up, and noticing his guitar chops, asked him if he would join me up there and before you know it, and 20 years after being on a stage in front of an audience, I was nervously and scared out of my fuckin' mind tearing through song I had just written. I was (with the help of Phil, supportively welcomed by most with open and applauding hands.
More later, but it just keeps getting better.

Why Lyrics From The Manteye Album/Cd For more music, bio and gig information along with podcast and updates check out manteye.com

Why

There's a dark cloud over this city tonight
As I walk down coca lane
I feel the cold wind blowing through my heart
I feel the blood boiling in my veins
I didn't know you'd strike like lightning
I thought I knew you so well
You left me standing alone hear so frightened
Frozen by your farewell
So why should I miss you
Tell me why should I love you

Some folks say, the kind of girls I knew
Were a dime a dozen, they were never true
They could walk on water, kiss like fire
Just like you
It must of been the hand that you held over me
A prison of yours, till you set me free
Your no good for me
Your just no good for me
So tell me why should I miss you
Tell me why did I love you

Hey you never did satisfy me
But you sure did try
And I'm alone tonight
But that's your loss
Not mine

Sweet temptation is so unique
It must of been my strength that made you weak
Your no good for me
Your just no good for me
You were never any good for me
And your still no good for me
Tell me why, tell me why
So tell me why should I miss you
Tell me why did I love you

Get On Board Lyrics From The Manteye Album/Cd For more music, bio and gig information along with podcast and updates check out manteye.com

Get On Board

I was eighteen years old and I felt like a man
Layin' tracks through the countryside, I had a plan
And I couldn't see no future in these northern towns
That's when I heard the whistle, it was callin' me down
Chorus
It said get on board, this ain't no train
It's a living legend, from way back when
And it rolls by that highway in a parallel line
Through the rest of these towns, the world left behind

Now the pool halls and the junk yards were a place to call home
Hangin' out with the good ol' boys, no one was alone
And when it came time for leavin', we did it one by one
That's when I heard the whistle, it was callin' me down
Chorus
It said get on board, this ain't no train
It's a living legend from way back when
And it rolls by that highway in a parallel line
Through the rest of these towns, the world left behind

Bridge
No I didn't have to run
Cause there was no where to hide
But when the whistle called me down
That's when I knew it was time
Chorus
It said get on board, this ain't no train
It's a living legend from way back when
And it rolls by that highway in a parallel line
Through the rest of these towns
This little old world left behind

Memphis Sky Lyrics From The Manteye Album/Cd For more music, bio and gig information along with podcast and updates check out manteye.com

Memphis Sky

Now There's This Little Place Across The River
We're Talkin' Tough
'Cause Men And Women Over There,
They Believe In This Stuff
They'll Lay There Hearts Down
In The Arkansas Rain
And They'll Jam The Nightclubs
Down By The Waterfront
Every Night Of The Week
Just To Play That Jukebox
As Loud As They Want
While Over In Tennessee
Things Are Never Gonna Be The Same
That Rock And Roll That Keeps Everything Loose
Has Got Us Dancing While Were Singing The Blues
This Memphis Sky
Will Never Fall In
This Memphis Sky
Is Where It All Began
This Memphis Sky
Has Been Here All The Time
This Memphis Sky
Now Jennie's A Dancer
And Her Mama's A Saint
She's Got All The Answers
But Jennie Ain't Gonna Wait
She'll Turn Those Engines On
And Make You Glad That You Came
Hopeless Romantics, They Could Never Sit Still
As Long As They Got Those Tennessee Hills
This Memphis Sky
Will Never Fall In
This Memphis Sky
Is Where It All Began
This Memphis Sky
Has Been Here All The Time
This Memphis Sky
Remember Elvis And What He Gave Me And You
Just To Bring Us All A Little Closer To
This Memphis Sky.

Lazy River Lyrics From The Manteye Album/Cd For more music, bio and gig information along with podcast and updates check out manteye.com

Lazy River

Well There Were Shady Trees Here Where I Was Born
The Rivers Still There But The Trees Are Gone
Like Everything Else I Guess Nothing Ever Stays The Same
And People Come Here From Miles Around
To Pitch There Tents Near The Midway Grounds
And Listen To Rock And Roll
In The Pouring Rain

And It Could Never Feel Like Some Foreign Land
So I'll Come Back Here When I Can

Because I'm Still Here Stuck On Lazy River Again
Oh Yes I'm Still Here Stuck On Lazy River Again

Now The Old Man That Used To Live Next To Me
Had A Faithful Dog And A Colour T.V.
That We Would Watch As He Spoke Of The Good Ol' Days
He Said I've Been Around This Big Old World
Still Stand At Attention When The Flags Unfurled
When I Was A Boy Son Things Had To Be That Way
And What Brought Me Back Here I Don't Know
I Guess There's No Place That I Can Go

Because I'm Still Here Stuck On Lazy River Again
Oh Yes I'm Still Here Stuck On Lazy River Again
You Bet I'm Still Here Stuck On Lazy River
Rock And Roll Is Still Here
Stuck On Lazy River
The Old Man Is Still Here
Stuck On Lazy River
And It's A Lonely Place Yea

Belts, Boot And Rodeo Hats Lyrics From The Manteye Album/Cd For more music, bio and gig information along with podcast and updates check out manteye.com

Belts, Boot And Rodeo Hats

Well he's a real live wire
And he's coming your way
He'll be getting there from everywhere
And leavin' any day
He's a man that's on a mission
Being guided by the sun
But he won't get off that curcuit
'Till his ridin' days are done
He's got a pony named Mona Lisa
And a four by four by Ford
And he knows how to ride the big time
Keeps comin' back for more
But that won't hide the cowboy in me
This is the way it is oh yea
Chorus
I've got the belts, boots and rodeo hats
Tell me little sister where it's at
I wanna ride the pony's with a broken back
In these belts, boots and rodeo hats
Here we go

Well there a heaven up above
For those who can wait
And a hell down below
With a bull horn on the gate
And there ain't nobody gonna tell me how to get there
Cause I've been to hell and back and everywhere
Oh Oh and I've seen the sunrise when it wasn't so good
And I've seen all those bad girls in your neighborhood
But that won't hide the cowboy in me
That's just the way it is
Repeat Chorus
Bridge
He'll be waking up with strangers
And talkin' to himself
It's a lonely old life
In his one room hotel
But he'll take that trailer eastward
Or where-ever he goes
And where he winds up
Well nobody knows yea yea
Repeat Chorus 2x
Let him go
Watch him ride
Till he's long, long, long gone honey

So Sensational Lyrics From The Manteye Album/Cd For more music, bio and gig information along with podcast and updates check out manteye.com

So Sensational

Oh Eddie's got a silver shadow
Gonna take it out on the street tonight
And Louie's got a volkwagen
Top down when the moment is right
And don't ever kid yourself honey
These boys mean business
They come from the other side of town
To do a little living, it's poetry in motion
And they ain't gonna stop until
They bring this city down

Now I've got a girl
Her hair is strawberry blond
She's smoldering hot
And were sittin' at the pony express
By the sign in the parking lot
And I don't know how long that I can go on
Doing time with somebody I've been living without
But I'm gonna find a way somehow baby
If I have to give away everthing
This city's got
Chorus
It's so sensational to be out on the street tonight
It's so sensational, it takes so little just to make it to the bottom line
So sensational
Honey give me a kiss so I can check your temperature twice yea

There's a sign on the freeway
Tell you which way to follow this road uptown
When you get to the first set of lights
Turn left or you'll never make it off this merry go round
I see a lot of young blooded fortune hunters
It looks like some kind of tourist trap
Gonna do a little livin', it's poetry in motion
And they ain't gonna stop
Until they get the city back
It's so sensational to be out on the street tonight
It's so sensational, it takes so little just to make it to the bottom line
So sensational
Honey give me a kiss so I can check your temperature twice yea
I see a lot of young blooded fortune hunters
It looks like some kind of tourist trap
Gonna do a little living, it's poetry in motion
And they ain't gonna stop
Until they get the city back
It's so sensational, to be out on the street tonight
It's so sensational, it takes so little just to make it to the bottom line
It's so sensational, to be out on the street tonight
It's so sensational, it takes so little just to make it to the bottom line
It's so sensational
Honey give me a kiss so I can check your temperature twice yea
Now Eddies got a silver shadow, gonna take it out on the street tonight

Devil Of A Town Lyrics From The Manteye Album/Cd For more music, bio and gig information along with podcast and updates check out manteye.com

Devil Of A Town

I hear the ashpalt's layed down fresh on mainstreet
And the kids are already puttin' their little footprints down
And the angels are dressed to the nines
It's quite a sight to see
But not until those bad boys come around
And there's a little house up on first ave
Where the party has already started
So saddle up your pick-up trucks
This ain't no social life for the faint hearted
Chorus
It's a Devil of a town
Devil of town yea
Devil of a town
Devil of town yea

And the motels are never empty, there's a room if you need it
And the mayor he's got a monthly bill that, he don't talk about
So if you've got a ring on your finger
Don't worry cause it don't mean much
Soon enough those bad boys will come around
And the church is never full on sunday
Cause there ain't no social life for the faint hearted

It's a Devil of Town
Devil of town yea
Devil of a town
Devil of town yea
It nothing but a devils town yea
Repeat Chorus
Nothing but a devils town

Root Beer Romeo Lyrics From The Manteye Album/Cd For more music, bio and gig information along with podcast and updates check out manteye.com

Root Beer Romeo

I Press My Clothes
And I Comb Back My Hair
I Look As Good A I Can
With What I Got
There's Nothing Better To Wear
And I Go Out
Where You Work In The Soda Shop
Honey,I'd Lie Down With The Devil
Just To Wake Up With An Angel
But I'll Never Get Anywhere
Sucking On Soda Pop.
Cause I'm A Root Beer Romeo
I Only Dance When The Dance Is Slow
Yea I'm A Root Beer Romeo
I Need A Woman, Not A Burger To Go, No, No, No.
Now I Say Yes
And You Say No
Yet We Sit Here Tonight On The Old Man's Couch
With The Lights Down Low
And I Freeze Up
'Cause You Cooled Me Down
By The Time We Get Close To The Thrill Of It All
It Will Be To Late
We'll Be Running Out Of Soda Pop.
'Cause I'm A Root Beer Romeo
I Only Dance When The Dance Is Slow
Yea I'm A Root Beer Romeo
I Need A Woman, Not A Burger To Go, No, No, No.
And I Got A Little Money Babe
And I Got A Lot Of Energy
And We Could Spend The Whole Night Talking About
The Way Things Could Be
Or Do Something About It Right Now.
Cause I'm A Root Beer Romeo
Root Beer Romeo
I Only Dance When The Dance Is Slow
Yea I'm A Root Beer Romeo
Root Beer Romeo
I Need A Woman, Not A Burger To Go. Yea, Yea, Yea, No, No, No.

She's No Angel Lyrics From The Manteye Album/Cd For more music, bio and gig information along with podcast and updates check out manteye.com

She's No Angel

I have been tempted
many times I have tried
to change I've got but I'll walk down that line with you
I could wait till temptation arrives
Would I stop dead in my tracks
could I walk down that line with you
She could make her impression on somebody else
the truth always comes out everytime she tells it thats true
So you'd better not be an emotional man
You'd better be somebody that understands her like I do
Or she'll get the best of you
She's no angel
But she's everything I need
She's no angel
But she's all that I've got
And she'll stand by me
Now whenever I feel empty and there's no one inside
Knockin' on my soul well I know that you've tried to get through
Doesn't matter where you are
I know that your tryin' to get in
And you may be far away
But I know where I stand with you
And with all this temptation we've learned how to live
In spite of ourselves we have learned how to give what we do
And we do
So I'd better not be an emotional man
I'd better be somebody that understands her like I do
And I do ya
She's no angel
But she's everything I need
She's no angel
But she's all that I've got
And she'll stand by me
She's no angel ----------She's everything I need
Shes no angel ----------She's everything I got
She's no angel -----------And she's everything I want
She's no angel --------------Yes She's everything I need ya
She's no angel --------------She's everything I want
She's no angel--------------And she'll stand by me
She's no angel ------------------She'll stand by me yea yea yea

Seven Minutes To Midnight Lyrics For more music, bio and gig information along with podcast and updates check out manteye.com

Seven Minutes To Midnight

He Was A Big Man And A Holy Roller
With The Bible In His Hand And Rosary Beads
He Had A Shot Gun In The Window Of His Pick-Up
And He Laid Down The Law, That's What He Believed
He Worked The Drive-In's Every Sunday
Put The Fear Of God In Every Woman And Man
And The Plate Was Passed By The Sisters Of Mercy
As He Screamed At The Top Of His Lungs He Said
There Ain't No Retribution For The Innocent Man
It's Seven Minutes To Midnight
And Your Time Is Almost Gone
It's Seven Minutes To Midnight
You'd Better Save Your Soul
If You've Done Wrong

Now There's Another Man Who's Riding In A Limousine
Telling His Stories To The Innocent One's
He's Made The Big Time, You Can See Him On Television
Talking To The Pilgrims In The California Sun
He Works The Stadiums Just Like A Professional
Brings Big Dollars On Any Old Day
He's Got The Shine On His Forehead
That'll Make You Feel Good
But You Don't Get The Message
'Til The Message Comes Through
At Seven Minutes To Midnight
When Your Time Is Almost Gone
It's Seven Minutes To Midnight
You'd Better Save Your Soul
If You've Done Wrong
It's Seven Minutes
Seven Minutes
Seven Minutes To Midnight

Manteye And Kevin Micheal Butler (Mr K) For more music, bio and gig information along with podcast and updates check out manteye.com

Lots going on last night at the Moonshine Cafe. Kevin Micheal Butler (Mr K), Phil Kane, Jim Hardy and Manteye did a small set.
We did Long After John, Silent River and Brand New Angel around 11pm. Seem to sign in late. There were a lot of singers and songwriters there John and Jane the owners are very cool people and I consider myself lucky, because if it wasn't for the Moonshine Cafe, I would not have anywhere close and cool to play every Tuesday and I would not have met all those cool people like Sandy Yates, Terry Paunkoff, Kevin Micheal Butler (Mr K), Phil Kane, Jim Hardy.
I feel blessed especially to have met and became a good friend with Kevin. He takes these songs to another level I think.

I've Written Over 70 Songs Since Sept 1st For more music, bio and gig information along with podcast and updates check out manteye.com

I've Written Over 70 Songs Since Sept 1st, here at the dining room table that I took over in our house that 1st day of September 2010
It was done in an effort to climb out of a severe depression that gripped me for a year. I had not written a song for 20 years since the disbanding of the Manteye band.  We just couldn't keep it together after certain setbacks and circumstances.   We loved what we did for a while there and it was stadium or at the very least arena stuff, but we didn't get the chance to make the climb. By writing these songs I have purged myself of my depression which had nothing to do with music. I'm sort of going the direction of many singers and songwriters that have come before me and I just try to tell the story as best I can and as many writers will tell you.....just keep writing and the songs will come.
I have in the process of starting back at the songwriting, had the opportunity to write with one of my old bandmates and friends Ernie Guidoccio. I think we've written about 11 or so together so far this year. Twenty years ago we penned songs like Why and So Sensational together as well as Lazy River and Seven Minutes To Midnight.
.With Ernie writing is always easy because he sends a file that is very rough in production scope, but very rich is spaces and colours.  He kind of sings something of the melody and we work it back and forth until we are happy with something that sort of sounds like something else and then it gets my head spinning and before you know it, I have rough draft of lyrics and music that well deserves, another good spin or two at the Zoom Mic.
I had the chance 20 years ago or more to write with his brother (another great band mate) Augy Guidoccio.
We wrote lots of great songs off of the Manteye Album/CD like She's No Angel and Belt, Boots, as well as other memorables as Memphis Sky and Root Beer Romeo. I love all these songs still as I helped give birth to them and raised them as if they were my own flesh and blood.
Thank God they don't eat much!
